(More customer reviews)One of my first electric razors over 20 years ago was a rotary razor, and it does not seem that the technology has really advanced that much. I have been shaving with a Braun 2000 flat razor for years and it does a very good job, and the flat blade allows me to trim around my beard/goatee when I have one. My first experience with this Philips rotary razor was very different.
The unit is very quiet -- it doesn't even feel like it is doing anything. It is a very gentle shave, and did not leave my face and neck red like the Braun often does. The resulting shave on flat skin was about the same, as far as I could tell. (I actually shaved one have of my face and neck with the Braun, and the other with this one. Independent outside observation by a female face tester resulted in her not really being able to tell much difference between the sides.)
That alone makes this a contender for a shaver to have, if you are clean shaven. It is much more difficult to trim around bears with this, and if you do want to trim sideburns or such, you have to pop off the rotary head and snap in a trimmer. Yet another piece to lose! Still, the unit comes with a travel case with room enough for this part.
It charges quickly, runs all week, and the cleaning base does a fine job. It is mechanically motorized and lowers the shaver in to the solution then powers through a cleaning cycle. I am not sure this extra mechanism provides a better, cleaner razor, or just gives more parts to break or go wrong, but it looks neat.
So overall, for clean shaving, I would not have a problem recommending this since the results are similar to what I was used to with the Braun, but it's quieter and gentler on skin - at least to me. I do not like it for shaving around bears, and for that I would take my Braun razor over this one any time.
That said, I have used this razor almost exclusively, beard be darned, for the past month or two and still like it.
